BABY QUILTS;
QUILTING FOR BABIES IS UNIQUE AND FUN! Baby quilts is an area of quilting where there are only a few experts who have researched the history of these types of quilts. Mention of these tiny quilts began toward the end of the 17th century. Today there are not many examples that have survived the years, because these quilts were used over and over again for each succeeding baby in the family. For those baby quilts that have survived the years, they provide us with a unique peek into a window of history during which they were created. Quilts from the past often are a reflection of social history, or politics, or are unique signatures of specific communities within a country. For example, in the United States, many of us are familiar with the unique and beautiful patterns and colors in the Amish quilts. Baby quilts, and the quilting techniques used for them, are as personal and varied as the people who created them in the past, and to those people today who continue this unique tradition. History has given us some small pieces from our country's past, from the fine materials available to the privileged Victorian household baby quilts, to the patchwork quilts sewn from the used fabrics of the clothing of American settlers needed to keep their babies and other members of their families warm. Today, baby quilts are making a big comeback in our ever commercial world. However, more and more people are appreciating the beauty and usability of handmade quilts for babies and young children. We have access to incredible fabrics in an almost infinite array of colors, mixtures of colors, and textures. While there are hundreds of beautiful manufactured baby quits and matching accessories available in stores now, the focus of many parents and grandparents is shifting, and looking for unique, one of a kind quilts for their special little ones. I invite you to share pictures of your baby quilts, and or unique history of these quilts in your family, with all through my site. Come back often, as I hope to expand information on this topic as time goes on, by providing links to go to and explore in the wonderful world of cozy, comfy baby quilts! |
